Introduction

The Department of Physiology, AIIMS Patna is dedicated to state of art teaching, research and clinical services and is largely successful in its endeavour for excellence in the field. During the reference period, the department has established a 'Yoga and Meditation' Lab in the Department as a part of its mission of integrating clinical services with core teaching and research activities. The department has also initiated the process of establishing advanced neuro-cognitive lab with the commissioning of dense array 'EE with FNIRS' system. Three Postgraduate students have taken admission in the department during this period. The department has also received approval for PhD course from this year. One of the recently joined, Faculty member Dr. Poonam Verma, has been selected to the post of Additional Professor at AIIMS Bilaspur (Himachal Pradesh) and she has joined the Institute. Dr. Ramji Singh, Who headed the department for so many years too have been selected as Executive Director of AIIMS Kalyani, and has taken up the responsibility. During the Covid 19 pandemic the department has contributed in the critical services of AIIMS Patna by running flu corner (with Department of C&FM) and help desk facility. The Department has also contributed in the teaching and student assessment activities of AIIMS Deoghar.

  • Clinical
    The department is providing various clinical lab services to the ‘patient care services’, this is a unique initiative by the department is rendering the following services through Autonomic lab for ‘Comprehensive Autonomic Function Test & Heart rate Variability test. It provides its services of (EEG) Electro-encephalography & Neurocognitive lab. Polysomnography Lab is used by the department for Adult and paediatric sleep studies & Nap studies. The Cardio-respiratory lab is providing PFT & ECG (12 lead), and conducting Nerve conduction studies, VEP, EMG (subjective to needle availability, else surface EMG), MEP and SSEP & BERA through its ENMG lab. It is also providing services for Investigating Infertility and related condition through its Andrology Lab and is also conducting Intra-operative Neurophysiological Monitoring. The department has recently started the Yoga and Meditation Lab in the institute.
  • The teaching and learning programs of the Department
    Due to Covid pandemic related issues lurking intermittently most of the teaching and learning activities involved hybrid mode i.e. online as well as offline modes of teaching as and when required. The teaching and learning methodology of the department include both conventional as well as modern approaches. It includes didactic lecture classes, practical classes; Problem based learning, Objectively Structured Practical Examinations and Weekly interactive Student seminars etc. As a part of continued teaching/ learning program for faculty members and residents of the department, various activities are organized as a routine which include academic presentations by Junior Residents and senior residents, Journal club meeting and academic activity review meetings every week. Under the revised curriculum for undergraduate students The Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Biochemistry consented and implemented mutually for partial integration of the teaching learning content along with early clinical exposure in clinical relevant topics in coordination with respective clinical departments.
  • Community services/Outreach programs
    The faculty members have been involved in various community outreach services of the Institute as and when organized/ required by the Institute. The activities included telemedicine related services, community outreach programs like outdoor camps and mass education programs through virtual media.
