Introduction

Nuclear Medicine is a super-specialty branch of Medicine that deals with Theranostics (Therapy and diagnosis) using unsealed radio-active tracers to provide information about the functions of specific organ at molecular level (Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine) and treatment of various disease (Targeted Radio-nuclide therapy) like Hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancers using Radio-iodine (I-131), Metastatic Neuroendocrine tumors using Lu-177 DOTATATE (Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy – PRRT), metastatic castration resistant prostatic cancers using Lu-177/Ac-225 PSMA, neural crest tumors like neuroblastoma using I-131 MIBG, HCC with Y-90 microshere, Targeted Alfa therapies with Ac-225, Metastatic bone pain palliation (P-32, Sm-153 EDTMP etc.), radiation synovectomy etc. The nuclear endocrinology unit (thyroid clinics, NET clinic etc.), nuclear cardiology unit (Myocardial perfusion imaging MPI, myocardial viability study), nuclear GFR lab, dedicated radio-pharmacy lab, PET-CT, SPECT-CT, Medical Cyclotron, Radio-immuno assay (RIA) lab and dedicated radio-nuclide therapy wards etc. are different sections of the department to provide services to the patients.

AIIMS Patna has expanded its flying color wing by introducing the most awaited advanced medical service branch in 2021 by inauguration of Department of Nuclear Medicine on 3rd December 2021

Dr. Pankaj Kumar joined as an Assistant Professor and established the department being the first faculty and Head. After joining of the Faculty, the department is undergoing a comprehensive transformation fulfilling the norms and rules of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Mumbai to provide almost all state-of-art Theranostic services to patients with utmost care by adding Ga-68 radio-pharmacy lab in addition to routine FDG PET procedures to manage patients with Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) and metastatic castration resistant prostate cancers (mCRPC). In coming months, AIIMS Patna is going to provide services through SPECT-CT scanner & PET-CT scanner.

The Department of Nuclear Medicine started Thyroid Clinic (Nuclear Medicine) to provide best patient care with utmost dedication to patients with thyroid disorders and post-operated cases of differentiated thyroid cancers – 1st of this kind in Bihar.

The department is located in basement of OPD building.
